For birdlovers

We are located in the middle of the Frisian wood and lake area and are surrounded by the special nature reserves the “Mieden”. This is a nesting area for many bird kinds. The low, open parts are rich with meadow birds. Several endangered and delicate species live here, as the Teal, Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit, Redshank, Whinchat and Common Snipe.
For the last sort, the Common Snipe, The Mieden are the most important nesting area in Friesland. This makes the Mieden very important for the whole of the Netherlands. The rest of the area has more of an enclosed character through the presence of thicket, trees and bogs. In the thickets and at the edge of young woods, species like short-toed treecreeper, Olive-Backed Pipit, Common Redstart and Marsh Warbler brood. Wet elements like shallow natural ponds or water ditches are important for foraging water birds and there are many kinds of dragonflies here as well. A couple of particularities are the Irish Damselfly and the Brilliant Emerald.
